2 BROKE GIRLS - 2 GAY GIRLS?
A great look at the queering of the female buddy odd-couple sitcom (not so new ahem…Laverne and Shirley) but a great first look at what I think will become an interesting and potential very queer “friendly” show, if only it can get rid of the “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”-like Andy-Rooney-over-the-top-style characterization of Asian Americans. The cafe boss is truly regressive. Not that he shouldn’t have an accent - many Asian Americans do - but I think we can agree that his is non-descript and is the axis-point of where the comedy of his character is supposed to lay. yuck.
Anyway, let us reflect on other shows that exploit the erotic power of female companionship (or at least as it is in the cultural imagination) without actually having explicitly lesbian characters (many have lesbian content, even sex, but no relationships or, god forbit, L.O.V.E.). Hmmmm…too many to name?
Also, its interesting to see how explicit sitcoms can be in language now (this show said Bitch and even Punta in its last episode). I remember when you could smoke cigarettes while eating your Big Mac in McDonald’s but NEVER EVER EVER say the word “Bitch” on TV. I’m old school I guess. I do, however, hope this show lasts. I just hope they figure out that gay isn’t just an angle…its actually how many peeps live and that honestly, the show might do better if they up the homo-ness. Either way, I hope they figure it out because there is a lot of potential…and I don’t mind a show built on one-liners so much…
